The first time I smelled rock rose, I was obsessed. It's rich, warm and woody, with a deep amber glow, like sun-warmed resin and old wood held close. There's nothing else quite like it: lush, enveloping, and so lovely you'll keep coming back just to breathe it in again.

Scent Story: Deep, ambered, and honeyed — warm resin, dry leaves, and ancient wood. Despite its name, rock rose doesn't smell like a rose: it's closer to amber or aged incense than to anything floral, the warm amber base note perfumers have treasured for centuries.

From Rocky Mediterranean Slopes

Rock rose, Cistus ladaniferus, is a tough Mediterranean shrub that grows wild on the rocky, sun-baked hillsides of southern Spain and Portugal, where almost nothing else will thrive; its striking blossoms, marked with crimson at the base, open for a single day at a time. It belongs to the rockrose family (Cistaceae), and despite its name, it doesn't smell like a rose. Its sticky resin, labdanum, has been gathered for perfume and incense since antiquity, and it is still the deep amber heart of classical French perfumery.

We use labdanum absolute, the rare, perfumery-grade form of the resin, rather than the more common steam-distilled essential oil, because it captures a deeper, richer amber. It comes from suppliers deeply committed to sustainable harvesting.
